Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
