The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
