Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
