New research suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
