Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
